Point Buy is the most balanced character creation method in D&D 5e. Unlike rolling (4d6 drop lowest), Point Buy gives every player the same resource budget (27 points), ensuring no character starts dramatically stronger or weaker than others. It encourages strategic ability score allocation based on class needs.
Point Buy System (27 points)
Spend 27 points across 6 abilities (scores 8-15)
Each ability (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA) starts at 8. You have 27 points to raise them. Score range: 8 (minimum) to 15 (maximum before racial bonuses).
All abilities = 8, Budget = 27Scores 8-13 cost 1 point each to increase by 1. Scores 14-15 cost 2 points each. So: 8→9 costs 1pt, 13→14 costs 2pt, 14→15 costs 2pt. Going from 8 to 15 costs 9 points total.
8=0, 9=1, 10=2, 11=3, 12=4, 13=5, 14=7, 15=9Every class has 1-2 primary abilities. Fighter: STR or DEX + CON. Wizard: INT + CON/DEX. Rogue: DEX + CHA/WIS. Max your primary ability (15) first, then secondary (14-15).
Primary = 15, Secondary = 14-152024 rules: +2/+1 to any two abilities (or +1/+1/+1). Aim to reach 16 in your primary ability after racial bonuses: 15 (point buy) + 1 (racial) = 16, or 14 + 2 = 16.
Final = Point Buy + Racial BonusStandard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) is a fixed set that costs exactly 27 points. Point Buy is strictly better because you can customize: a MAD (Multiple Ability Dependent) class like Paladin might prefer 15/15/12/8/10/8, which is impossible with Standard Array.
Rolling (4d6 drop lowest) averages 12.24 per score vs Point Buy's effective average of 11.5. But rolling has high variance — one player might get 18/16/14/12/10/8 while another gets 14/12/12/10/10/8. Point Buy guarantees fairness at the cost of lower ceiling.
The "meta" approach: max primary ability to 15, max secondary to 15 or 14 (depending on racial bonuses), ensure CON is at least 12 for survivability, dump one stat to 8 (usually your class's least-used ability). This gives you two 16s after racial bonuses at level 1.
