CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average of grade points earned in all subjects. Converting CGPA to percentage is necessary for job applications, higher education admissions, and competitive exams. The most widely used formula in India is CGPA × 9.5.
CGPA to Percentage (%)
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 (CBSE/VTU standard)
Different universities use different conversion factors. CBSE and VTU use ×9.5. Anna University uses ×10. Some universities have their own tables. Always check your institution's official conversion factor.
Check university guidelinesFor CBSE/VTU: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. Example: 8.5 CGPA × 9.5 = 80.75%. For Anna University: 8.5 × 10 = 85%.
CGPA × factor = %CGPA 9.5-10.0 = Outstanding (90-95%). 8.5-9.4 = Very Good (80-89%). 7.5-8.4 = Good (71-79%). 6.5-7.4 = Above Average (61-70%). Below 6.5 = Average or below.
Grade = f(CGPA)Most companies and universities accept the ×9.5 formula. Specify which system you used. For foreign university applications, provide both CGPA and equivalent percentage along with your university's official conversion certificate.
Include conversion sourceCBSE (10-point scale): × 9.5. VTU: × 9.5. Anna University: × 10. Mumbai University: uses a specific grade-to-percentage table. AICTE: × 9.5. Each system has slightly different conversion factors because the underlying grade point definitions differ.
You need CGPA-to-percentage conversion for: campus placement eligibility (most companies require 60% or 65% minimum), competitive exam applications (GATE, CAT, GRE), higher education admissions (both Indian and foreign universities), and government job applications.
Do not use ×9.5 if your university uses a different scale. A 4.0 GPA scale (common in the US) requires a completely different conversion — 3.0/4.0 ≠ 3.0 × 9.5. Always specify which grading system your CGPA is from.
