Frequently Asked Questions
How is high school GPA calculated?⌄
Add up grade points for each course (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0), multiply each by the course credits, sum the weighted points, then divide by total credits. For example: A(4.0) x 1 credit + B(3.0) x 1 credit = 7.0 / 2 credits = 3.50 GPA.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?⌄
Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale for all courses. Weighted GPA adds 0.5 for Honors courses and 1.0 for AP/IB courses. An A in AP class = 5.0 weighted vs 4.0 unweighted. Weighted GPA can exceed 4.0.
What GPA do you need for college?⌄
Varies by selectivity. Ivy League: 3.9+ unweighted. Top 50: 3.5+. State universities: 3.0+. Community colleges: typically open admission. Many colleges consider weighted GPA, course rigor, and upward trends.
How do AP classes affect GPA?⌄
AP courses add 1.0 to the grade point on the weighted scale. An A in AP = 5.0, B = 4.0, C = 3.0. Even a B in AP (4.0 weighted) is worth more than an A in regular (4.0). This incentivizes taking challenging courses.
Do plus and minus grades affect GPA?⌄
Many high schools use plus/minus grading: A+ and A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, etc. Some schools only use straight letter grades (no +/-). Check your school's specific policy.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA across semesters?⌄
Sum all grade points from all semesters and divide by total credits. Our calculator lets you enter previous cumulative GPA and credits, then adds your current semester to project new cumulative GPA.
What is a good GPA in high school?⌄
3.7+ is excellent (top 10-15%). 3.3-3.7 is very good. 3.0-3.3 is good (B average). 2.5-3.0 is average. Below 2.0 may affect eligibility for activities and graduation.
How does GPA rounding work?⌄
Most schools round to 2 or 3 decimal places. A 3.495 rounds to 3.50 (2 decimals) or 3.495 (3 decimals). For college applications, report your GPA exactly as it appears on your transcript - do not round up.
