How does the Nether coordinate calculator work?

The calculator applies Minecraft's 1:8 scale ratio. To find Nether coordinates from Overworld coordinates, divide X and Z by 8. To find Overworld coordinates from Nether coordinates, multiply X and Z by 8. The Y coordinate stays the same  -  it does not scale between dimensions.

How do I link Nether portals correctly?

First, note your Overworld XYZ with F3 (Java) or by checking coordinates in Bedrock settings. Divide your X and Z by 8 to get the Nether coordinates. Build your Nether portal at that exact X/Z location. When you step through, Minecraft will link the portals if no other portal exists within 128 blocks in the Nether.

Why does my portal take me to the wrong place?

This usually happens when another portal exists nearby in the Nether. Minecraft links each portal to the closest Nether portal within 128 blocks (X/Z). If someone else on your server has a Nether portal near those coordinates, you'll exit at their portal. Fix it by moving your Nether portal to a location at least 128 Nether blocks from all others.

Does Y coordinate matter for portal linking?

Y coordinate does not factor into the 1:8 scale conversion  -  only X and Z coordinates divide/multiply by 8. However, Y does matter for portal placement. Keep Nether portals above Y=4 (to avoid lava) and below Y=120 (to stay below the Nether roof). Building at Y=64 in the Nether is generally safe.

What is the difference between Java and Bedrock portal linking?

The 1:8 scale ratio applies to both Java and Bedrock editions. The main difference is the Nether roof: in Java edition, players can glitch through the bedrock ceiling at Y=127 to build highways. In Bedrock, the build height in the Nether is Y=127 and the ceiling is solid bedrock that you cannot pass through.

How much faster is the Nether than the Overworld?

Traveling 1 block in the Nether equals 8 blocks traveled in the Overworld. So if two Overworld bases are 1,600 blocks apart, you only need to walk 200 blocks in the Nether to get between them. This 8x travel multiplier makes Nether highways extremely valuable for connecting distant locations.

How much obsidian do I need for a Nether portal?

The minimum portal requires 10 obsidian blocks (2x3 opening, no corners). With corners it's 14 blocks. A standard 2x3 portal frame uses 14 obsidian. Larger portals: 3x4 uses 18, and a horse-friendly 4x5 uses 24 obsidian blocks. The opening (not the frame) must be at least 2 blocks wide and 3 blocks tall.

Can I use this calculator for Bedrock Edition?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Select Bedrock Edition at the top of the calculator. The 1:8 coordinate conversion works identically in Bedrock and Java. The only note is that Bedrock's Nether has a solid bedrock roof at Y=127 that cannot be bypassed, unlike Java Edition where players can build on top of the roof.
