Why Does Pluto Rotate So Slowly?

Pluto's slow rotation is tied to its gravitational relationship with its largest moon, Charon. The two bodies are in a state of mutual tidal locking - each always faces the same side toward the other. This is similar to how Earth's Moon always shows the same face toward Earth, except that with Pluto and Charon, both bodies are locked to each other.

Charon is unusually large relative to Pluto - about half the diameter and roughly one-eighth the mass. This mass ratio means that Pluto and Charon orbit a barycenter (center of mass) that actually sits above Pluto's surface, out in space between the two bodies. Some astronomers consider them a binary dwarf planet system rather than a planet-moon system.
